COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's top prosecutor says the water dispute with North Carolina is over.

Attorney General Henry McMaster told reporters in Columbia on Tuesday his lawsuit against North Carolina is ending, based on a new agreement.

McMaster sued in 2007 to stop a plan to allow two North Carolina cities to pump up to 10 million gallons a day from the Catawba and Yadkin river basins, both of which cross the state line with South Carolina.

He says the settlement uses a re-licensing plan created by Duke Energy as its basis. He says the plan is a model for regional cooperation.

A bistate commission had approved an agreement among the two states, Duke Energy and a public utility. The states agree to reevaluate water sharing during droughts and to update a river basin study every 10 years.
