(AP) -- Federal regulators say a utility company gave them false information and failed for months to fix important safety equipment at a Darlington County nuclear power plant last year.

The State newspaper reports that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Wednesday said it isn't fining Progress Energy but may increase inspections at the Raleigh, N.C.-based utility's Robinson Nuclear Plant near Hartsville.

Progress officials say they company did not try to mislead federal regulators and company workers tried to fix generator problems discovered in 2008.

The NRC says Progress' failure to fix the initial problem led to a second generator breakdown. Regulators also say the company broke rules by failing to provide accurate information in a June 2009 report.
