(AP) -- Scholars from around the nation meet in Charleston for a symposium on South Carolina's secession from the Union that led to the Civil War.

The event opens Friday evening at The Citadel with a discussion of the Civil War centennial and the upcoming sesquicentennial.

Saturday's sessions focus on the state's secession from the union in December 1860.

Among the groups sponsoring the symposium are the National Park Service, the Fort Sumter-Fort Moultrie Historical Trust and The Citadel School of Humanities.
