(AP) -- South Carolinians are celebrating Arbor Day as they have for more than 75 years.

In 1934, the General Assembly designated the first Friday in December as Arbor Day - a time when there is often rainfall and trees are dormant so there is less shock to roots from transplanting.

At the Carolina Youth Development Center in Charleston, there's a tree-naming contest and children will help plant an oak. The center was founded in 1790 as the Charleston Orphan House, the nation's first public orphanage.

In another ceremony, Mayor Joe Riley joins city officials in planting two live oaks in Hampton Park.

On Saturday, there's an Arbor Day event at Paris Mountain State Park near Greenville. Visitors can plant trees and learn about the many benefits trees provide.
