According to Lt. Governor André Bauer, criminals have been attempting to steal financial information in the past few days over the telephone by claiming to work for Medicare.

Bauer's office says there are about 727,000 Medicare beneficiaries in South Carolina.

Bauer reminded recipients that, "There are no 'fees' for signing up for Medicare plans and no need to provide bank account information to enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan during open enrollment."

Bauer said if you get a call from someone who says they work for Medicare, contact your local police department or the Office on Aging at 1-800-868-9095.

You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for more information, or visit their website here. http://www.medicare.gov/>.
