(AP) -- RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina police and sheriff's deputies are waiting for guidance on a new ban on video poker-style games after judges issued slightly different rulings on the law's legality.
Video and Internet-based sweepstakes games inside parlors, convenience stores and bars were supposed to be turned off by Wednesday. The General Assembly agreed in July to eliminate what lawmakers called illegal gambling operations designed to get around
a 2007 video poker machine ban. Operators call the machines entertainment and marketing tools.
A Wake County judge upheld the new law earlier this week, but a Guilford County judge said part of the law was too broad. Appeals may be ahead.
Attorney General Roy Cooper's office is still drafting advice for sheriffs on how to enforce the law.
