(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The state Education Department is releasing a survey of students' and parents' opinions on single-gender education in South Carolina's public schools.

Outgoing schools chief Jim Rex is scheduled to release the survey results Tuesday at Hand Middle School in Columbia.

South Carolina has become a national leader in single-gender education. Nearly 125 public schools offer boys-only and girls-only classes. That's up from about 70 in 2007, when David Chadwell was hired as the nation's only statewide coordinator of public single-gender programs.

The push for single-sex education in South Carolina has been part of Rex's efforts to give parents more options within public schools.

About 7,000 students, 1,120 parents and 760 teachers responded to the latest survey.
