(AP) -- CHICAGO (AP) - People who have diabetes and want to lower their blood sugar can get the best results by mixing aerobics with weight training.
And researchers find that the same study works best for weight loss as well.
Blood sugar fuels the muscles, and more sugar is burned during aerobic activity. Weight training builds more muscle. And both activities change muscle proteins in ways that enhance the process.
Patients in the study achieved the results over nine months. They exercised three days a week for about 45 minutes each session.
The goal of the research was to test exercise programs that doctors could realistically recommend and patients could stick with.
The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
