(AP) -- It took a little pulling and a little wrestling, but a 500-pound alligator named Charlie at the Joint Base Charleston Weapons Station has been assigned new quarters.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that crews moved the 12-foot gator and his girlfriend gator Wednesday to a holding pen in a retention pond at the base.

They will stay there temporarily while the rest of the pond is cleaned and deepened.

Charlie has lived in the pond for years and has been fed with mess hall scraps, chicken wings and other assorted food items tossed over the fence into the pond.
