Coastal Carolina University invited the community to tour its Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies Wednesday afternoon.
Several booths illustrated ongoing projects and research initiatives the center is participating in so the public can get a better sense of what they do. Nearly 50 CCU students have been hired to take part in research grants across the country.
Dr. Paul Gayes is the center's director. He says the work students are doing now prepares them for the workforce after they graduate. "A lot of these research projects bring in state of the art instrumentation, so they're getting trained on the kinds of things they will immediately see when they get into the private sector."
Dr. Gayes says they are working on several local projects that include studying climate change.
