Schools across the state recognized Earthquake Awareness Week Wednesday, with a drill.
At Carolina Forest Elementary, students crouched under their desks when the weather radio tone came out at 9:30 a.m. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service are sponsoring this week to remind us earthquakes pose a threat to the state year round.
The drill gave schools a chance to test their safety plans and make sure their students know how to protect themselves. "We walked throughout the building and looked around. The teachers and students were well prepared for the drill. They understand the importance of the drills to be safe if we were to have an actual emergency," said Asst. Principal Ben Prince.
Experts say stay inside if there's an earthquake and crawl under a desk or table.
The last major earthquake to hit the state was in Charleston in 1886.
