COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina student programming group has paid several famous people thousands of dollars for appearances.
The Greenville News reported Sunday that the founders of Ben and Jerry's ice cream got $35,000 and "Ace of Cakes" cable television star Duff Goldman got $27,000.
University vice president Jerry Brewer says student leaders decide who to invite and how much to pay them. Carolina Productions gets about half a million dollars a year from student activity fees to plan programming.
The Greenville News obtained a list of paid speakers after it was revealed that former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford was paid $15,000 to speak to students.
Greenville Republican state Sen. Mike Fair says the university should have more say over who speaks and how much is paid.
