(AP) -- CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn says the tough economy hurt Democrats at the polls, but the party will rebound in South Carolina.

The House Majority Whip made his observation on Friday, when he announced he will run for minority whip in the new Congress. Clyburn told The Associated Press that GOP gains on Tuesday are typical of mid-term elections and added if there's more economic news like the jobs report on Friday, President Barack Obama will be in good shape in 2012.

The government announced the economy added 151,000 jobs in October.

Clyburn also expects South Carolina Democrats will recover from Tuesday's losses. He says there were big Republican gains in the mid-90s when David Beasley was elected governor. Clyburn says four years later, a Democrat was in the governor's mansion.
