(AP) -- RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Polls are open for an election that could tip the balance of power in both Washington and Raleigh for years to come.
Voting began at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday across North Carolina, with polls scheduled to close at 7:30 p.m. The top of ballots across the state will feature the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Richard Burr and Democratic challenger Elaine Marshall. Also up for grabs are 13 congressional seats and all 170 slots in the General Assembly.
Those races could determine whether Republicans are able to seize control of the chambers. They haven't controlled the state Senate for more than a century.
Some 950,000 voters have already made their selections through early voting and mail-in absentees. Of those, 46 percent came from registered Democrats and 36 percent came from Republicans.
