(AP) -- OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A growing number of cities in the United States are debating whether it's time to allow Sunday alcohol sales.
From Oxford, Miss., to communities in Alabama, Texas and beyond, debate is focusing on whether easing long-standing liquor restrictions is a good step toward boosting tax revenue amid the economic downturn.
Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson and other local leaders are discussing the idea of allowing Sunday alcohol sales at restaurants in that city, which has a reputation as a party town as home to the University of Mississippi.
But some religious leaders frown on easing up. All told, 36 states now allow Sunday alcohol sales, according to a trade group that tracks the data. Votes on alcohol are pending in South Carolina, Alabama and Texas.
