(AP) -- The National Transportation Safety Board says a North Carolina pilot lost control of his plane for undetermined reasons when he died in a crash in South Carolina last year.
Authorities say 48-year-old Manfred Stolle of Cornelius, N.C., was en route from Charleston to Mooresville, N.C., on Jan. 29, 2009, when he reported fumes in the cockpit.
The plane crashed while trying to land at the Berkeley County Airport near Moncks Corner.
The NTSB reports says that the pilot reported smelling burnt electronics in the Cirrus SR22 airplane three weeks before the accident.
A subsequent check found everything operating normally.
After the accident, the NTSB found a flight display capacitor showed heat distress but was operating normally at the time of the crash.
