Horry County Schools will be getting its first charter high school.

The Palmetto Academy for Learning Motorsports, or PALM, operates as an adult education facility right now, but will be part of Horry County Schools starting next year.

Monday night, at the Horry County Board of Education meeting, the board approved PALM's charter application.

That means soon students who have a passion for motorsports will be able to obtain a full high school education.

Larry Biddle, who was at Monday night's meeting says, "We've got to create in our schools lots of niches for lots of students. We found that kids were dropping out of school to work on their cars and we said, 'Gee whiz, wow, lets go ahead and put a program together which is their passion and let them get credit for it and learn their trade.'"

The school will open next school year.
