School board members hired Dr. Helena Littlejohn Tillar as the interim superintendent of the Marlboro County School District in a regular board meeting, Monday night.
The board received 16 applications and interviewed eight candidates before selecting Tillar.
She is currently the chief curriculum, instruction, and assessment officer for Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5.
Tillar replaces Randall Malachi who was served as acting superintendent after Frank Roberson resigned in August.
Officials tell us Tillar will serve as the interim leader of the school district until June 30, 2011, but there's an opportunity to extend her employment.
We're told negotiations involving her contract are still being worked out, but Tillar's salary is expected to be around $120,000.
Officials say she could begin her duties as superintendent around the middle of November.
