(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republican Ken Ard of Pamplico and Democrat Ashley Cooper of Charleston are vying for the post of lieutenant governor and are appearing in their first televised debate.

South Carolina Educational Television hosts the debate Monday evening at 7 p.m.

Cooper is a Charleston attorney and has never held elective office. Ard is a Florence County councilman.

The lieutenant governor succeeds the governor, should the top officeholder die or leave office. Official duties include presiding over the Senate and overseeing the state Office on Aging.

Two-term Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer stepped down in an unsuccessful run for governor.
