(AP) -- Local officials are trying to decide how much longer the runway needs to be at the Hilton Head Island airport.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the Federal Aviation Administration thinks officials should add at least 700 feet to the runway.
The newspaper reported the FAA said extending the runway from 4,300 feet to 4,600 feet might be enough for commercial air service, but isn't worth the cost for the federal government to pickup most of the tab.
Scott Seritt with the FAA's Atlanta Airports District Office wrote Beaufort County officials last week saying if the runway isn't extended to at least 5,000 feet, it wouldn't be worth the cost.
Hilton Head and county officials are trying to minimize the cost and neighborhood impact of a runway extension.
