NewsChannel 15 has learned the Marion County Board of Education is moving to consolidate and streamline services of their three school districts.
The South Carolina School Boards Association or SCSBA is searching for a superintendent to serve as the chief executive officer for the county board of trustees as well as superintendent of schools for three local school districts (Marion One, Two, and Seven).
Dr. Paul Krohne, Executive Director of SCSBA, tells NewsChannel 15 the new superintendent would oversee all three districts, eliminating the need for individual superintendents for the districts.
Dr. Krohne says the superintendent would be responsible for putting together an administrative office and staff that takes care of the needs of all the districts.
The three school boards in Marion, Mullins and the Rains-Centenary communities will remain intact.
The SCSBA has met with the board members, school administrators and the Marion County community to get feedback on their ideas and expectations for the new superintendent.
Dr. Krohne can't say how many applications they've received for the position, but says they expect around 25 people to apply by the November 12th deadline.
Dr. Everette Dean currently serves as superintendent of Marion District 7. Michael Lupo is the superintendent of Marion 1 and the interim leader of Marion 2, following the resignation of Dr. Nathaniel Miller.
In January, Miller resigned after being charged with embezzling more than $500,000 from the district. Police say he used the money to pay mortgages, his children's rent and their college tuition.
