(AP) -- CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina residents who dig history have a chance to check out the origins of their state. The Archaeological Society of South Carolina holds its annual Fall Field Day on Saturday at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site in Charleston.
Events include archaeology puzzles and dig boxes. There are also demonstrations of primitive weapons and tools, cooking with clay pots and underwater archaeology techniques.
Charleston Towne Landing is the site of the first permanent English settlement in the Carolinas in 1670. Later, colonists moved from the west bank of the Ashley River to the peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers where Charleston now stands.
