(AP) -- A preservationist working to sustain old slave cabins is taking his effort beyond South Carolina.
Joe McGill has spread his sleeping bag on the floors of seven slave cabins in South Carolina this year. On Thursday, he's spending the night in Montgomery, Ala., where he will sleep in a cabin in Old Alabama Town.
The following night McGill will stay at nearby Riverview Plantation.
McGill is a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He says preserving the cabins requires local efforts, and his goal is to encourage people to save those that are left as an important part of the South's past.
