(AP) -- BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Two of South Carolina's senior representatives are discussing the importance of the military's next-generation F-35 fighter jet to the state's military presence.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson are making an appearance Monday in Beaufort.

In July, South Carolina missed the cut for sites for the new jets, but state officials said they expected to remain in the running for the next round.

Shaw Air Force Base outside Sumter and McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Eastover were named as potential sites last year for the aircraft due to arrive at some bases in 2014 or 2015.

The Navy and Marine Corps are also expecting to fly the aircraft and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort has been touted as a potential site.
