It could be next week before we know if water in the Great Pee Dee River in Marlboro County is safe.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control says untreated wastewater from Mohawk Industries spilled into the river Thursday. It suspects wastewater from a lagoon got into the river when dykes were breached. That most likely happened when the area flooded during the tropical system swept through Wednesday night.
DHEC says people and pets should stay out of the river from Tom Blue's Landing in Marlboro County to where State Highway 34 crosses the river at the Darlington County line.
DHEC is taking samples to see if the river is free of waste. It will release those findings next week.
