Emergency management officials in Marlboro County say they've lifted voluntary evacuations for people living near Crooked Creek.

The water covering streets surrounding the Shady Rest and Richardson Park communities is slowly receding. Emergency managers say the creek has peaked and they expect it to go down in the coming days.

Thursday night, they asked residents near the creek to evacuate fearing the water would continue to rise. Some residents say the voluntary evacuation and the flooding caught them by surprise. "I thought it was going to get in the house but it didn't. Thank God, it didn't. This is very unexpected. I ain't never been through nothing like this before," said Sandra Williams, who left her home.

Emergency managers will continue to monitor the water levels of Crooked Creek.
