SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) -- Businesses in the city of Sumter are treating airmen and soldiers at Shaw Air Force Base to a free lunch as a sign of their appreciation.
Sumter Chamber of Commerce spokesman Grier Blackwelder says the Thursday meal will be offered to any serviceman or woman who comes to a hangar on the installation set aside for the event.
Blackwelder says the community provides volunteers, food, door prizes and entertainment for the lunch, which is expected to draw 2,000 military men and women.
Shaw is home to members of the 20th Fighter Wing, the Ninth Air Force, and elements of the Third Army.
