As promised, the heavy rain is causing problems. Reports of accidents and flooded streets are the top complaints so far.
The only thing hidden in the Hidden Woods subdivision off Highway 544 in Horry County Wednesday was the streets. The rain came with a fury around 3 p.m., and within minutes, the road became a river.
When school let out, there was only one way into the subdivision, and it was through standing water. Few motorists heeded the advice of "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Instead, they went through full-force, the water reaching the hoods of some of the cars. On nearby Highway 544, cars kicked up sheets of water as roadside drainage systems worked to swallow it away.
Officials say you may think you can get through a flooded road, but don't take the chance. A car can float away in just one foot of water. Many deaths during flooding are caused by people taking the risk, and officials say it's more often the men who take the risk.
Despite the problems being created, the poor visibilities and flooded streets, some praised the rain. After all, it's been weeks since we've seen much at all.
