South Carolina will receive about $2.3 million to get more people online and at higher speeds.

The money is for a full five year award period for broadband mapping in the state. Broadband mapping involves locating who is online, and where.

The Connect South Carolina Initiative released the state's first interactive broadband map in May 2010, and this money will allow the state to prioritize and track progress over a longer period of time.

The money will also be used to establish computer ownership and internet access programs.

Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
