(AP) -- KINSTON, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina energy officials say half a million dollars remains in a fund to provide rebates to people who replace old appliances with newer, more energy-efficient ones.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reported Saturday that the money is left over from $8.8 million provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. More than 62,000 appliances were purchased statewide.
North Carolina Energy Office spokesman Seth Efron says some people who applied for the rebates did not qualify, leading to about $500,000 left over. To be eligible, consumers must replace older appliances with Energy Star-qualified models that use about 25 percent less electricity.
Rebates range from $75 for dishwashers and freezers to $300 for several appliances including central air conditioners.
