A former principal of a Marion middle school has filed a lawsuit against the district for racial discrimination.

Federal documents say Patricia Holmes and her husband Edward Holmes filed the lawsuit this week.

Patricia Holmes says in June of 2006, she was commended for outstanding leadership as principal of Johnakin Middle School and was rated proficient overall.

She says in April of 2007, without any prior discussion or warning, she was demoted to assistant principal and transferred to Marion High School on the stated grounds of teacher turnover.

The lawsuit says she was replaced by a white man as principal of Johnakin Middle School.
