(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina's medical school will use a new $6.7 million grant to continue its work reducing health disparities among minority groups.
The university announced the grant from the National Institutes of Health on Friday. It will help continue work begun with a 2005 grant from NIH. The university says there are significant differences among black and white residents in rates of illness.
For example, more than 13 percent of the state's black residents have diabetes compared with 8.4 percent of white residents with the disease. USC has partnered with historically black Claflin University in Orangeburg to try to train more researchers.
That could be key to getting more blacks to participate in research and studies that could improve their health.
