The Ku Klux Klan planned to sponsor a rally in Florence in October, but this afternoon, the coordinator canceled the event.
He told NewsChannel 15's Tonya Brown he had a change of heart and thought that it would further fuel people's negative thoughts about the KKK.
Tonya talked with him many times throughout the day to try to meet and talk about the rally on camera. He would only agree to talk with us if we did not identify him.
In July, a coordinator for the Southeastern White Knights of the KKK filled out a notice of intent to hold the rally.
The rally was supposed to take place on the steps of the Florence City County Complex on October 16th.
City leaders said they have to allow any group, regardless of their beliefs, to conduct their events in the city when they fill out the notice of intent form.
The notice says 40 people were expected to attend the rally.
The coordinator said the rally was about immigration. He said immigrants and illegals have taken over everything and are taking all the jobs away.
The organizer believed the event would be peaceful because he says the KKK is a non-violent and Christian organization, that does not focus on hate any more.
But in the end, he decided to call off the rally all together and said he may even quit the group.
The last KKK rally in Florence was about 20 years ago.
