The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration updated its hurricane forecast for this season. It still predicts an active season.
Thursday, NOAA said it expects 14 to 20 named storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including 8 to 12 hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which 4 to 6 could be major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph).
In May, it predicted 14 to 23 named storms, 8 to 14 hurricanes and 3 to 7 major hurricanes.
NOAA says La Niña has formed in the Pacific Ocean, which means lower wind shear over the Atlantic Basin could help storm clouds organize. It says warmer water in the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans could also contribute to a more active season.
NOAA leaders say now is the time to prepare. August generally marks the most active part of the season.
