After some opposition from residents, Darlington city leaders are looking for ways to avoid moving several trees. They say those trees cause flooding.
Cashua Street has been known to flood for 60 years.
The state Department of Transportation says roots are clogging 70 to 75 feet of drainage pipe, which needs to be replaced.
City leaders say they also want to remove some trees that have been deemed hazardous.
But residents have mixed feelings.
"If it's an issue of safety, they do need to be removed, but you're right, they do provide a good bit of beauty to our wonderful city," said Zackary Odom.
The city is looking at other solutions, including putting the drainline under the sidewalk to avoid uprooting the trees.
They'll continue to look at their options before they vote on a plan.
