A group of veterans with a simple mission of welcoming home soldiers gathered Tuesday night to say thank you to a man who spent a year in Afghanistan.
Holding American flags and cheering, a group of SC Patriot Riders welcomed home US Army Spc. Steven Leimbach at the American Legion Post 178 in Murrells Inlet.
Leimbach's parents live in Horry County, and his mother is a member of the local Blue Star Mothers group. Leimbach lives in Washington State with his wife of less than two years.
"Best thing about being home is being able to give my wife a kiss every night and tell her I love her face to face," Leimbach said.
Following in short order behind his bride, Leimbach said he's enjoying time with his family, surfing, and having a "couple of beers."
"Nothing's better," he quipped.
Leimbach enlisted when he was 20 years old, and he's got about eight months left of active duty at Ft. Lewis in Washington State. It's highly unlikely, he says, that he'll be called back up for overseas deployment.
