Sunday's heavy rain left part of the new Myrtle Beach boardwalk looking more like a river walk.
"I think I should have brought my fins," quipped Lisa Strzelecki from Chicago.
Like Strzelecki and her family, many visitors arrived in Myrtle Beach this weekend expecting sunny skies and a walk down the new boardwalk.
"We've had to wade water even to get to the hotel," said Diana Massey. "Then we come back here (to the boardwalk) and all this is messed up."
For about two city blocks near the 2nd Avenue North Pier, several inches of water covered a cement section of the boardwalk.
While certain shoeless tourists waded through the water, others turned away to return another day.
"That's one of the reasons we came down. We'd been seeing it (the boardwalk) online, looking at it, excited about getting down here to use it, but now we can't," said Bridgette Hatfield from West Virginia.
Myrtle Beach Spokesman Mark Kruea said minor flooding at the boardwalk and along other parts of the beach is an on-going problem and something the city is continually addressing.
Kruea wasn't aware of Sunday morning's flooding, but said the boardwalk is equipped with a drainage system.
Sunday morning, bubbles floated to the surface of the faux pond from what appeared to be clogged drains beneath the water.
"It's not draining away. It's still standing. We were looking forward to having the opportunity to get on that today, but it looks like probably today isn't going to happen," said Massey.
Massey and her family bypassed that part of the boardwalk and hoped for better days ahead for their week of vacation.
"We hope the sun comes out and dries it up quickly," she said with a smile.
