GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina shoppers and government hope for a boost from the sales tax holiday coming up next month.

The Greenville News reported Monday the annual tax break on back-to-scool items will run from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8.

South Carolina's sales tax is 6 percent, and some counties have a local sales tax. Neither tax is collected on items needed for students going back to school.

Adrienne Fairwell with the state revenue department estimates shoppers will save nearly $3 million in sales taxes.

But Marianne Bickle with the University of South Carolina's College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management government will benefit from the weekend, too.

Bickle says it's unlikely that people will buy only tax-exempt items when they are out during the weekend.
