GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina police officer is hospitalized after being wounded by a shotgun blast while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Multiple media outlets reported the Goose Creek officer and the gunman were hospitalized following the Monday night shooting in the Charleston suburb.

Police Lt. Karen Nix says the officer was taken to the intensive care unit of a local hospital. His name was not released and Nix did not immediately return a telephone message from The Associated Press early Tuesday.

The wounded officer was reported to be alert and talking late Monday in the hospital.

The man with the shotgun was placed under arrest at the hospital.
