COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's challenger heads into the third quarter with nearly as much cash on hand as the Republican incumbent.
Campaign finance reports filed this week show less than $35,000 separates Wilson from Democratic challenger Rob Miller.
The South Carolina congressman best known nationwide for shouting "You lie!" at President Barack Obama had $1.75 million cash available as of June 30. Miller had $1.71 million.
Money poured into both campaigns after Wilson heckled the president during a health care speech to Congress last September.
Wilson had amassed $4.1 million in the campaign, compared to Miller's $2.5 million. However, Wilson had spent nearly $2.3 million. Miller had spent less than $750,000.
Wilson trounced his primary opponent, while Miller was unopposed.
