HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- Officials at a South Carolina island resort are considering several alternatives for extending the local airport runway.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Tuesday that the town of Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County Council want a consultant to study several different lengths for the runway.
They want to know the impacts of extending the runway to up to 5,400 feet.
Some private pilots and real estate agents worry that without a longer runway the island could lose corporate business traffic and some of its economic base.
Residents who live near the airport oppose an extension, saying a longer runway will mean more air traffic and pollution that will hurt property values.
