A man on a mission to save the earth is paddling from Key West, Florida to New York City.

Saturday afternoon, the extreme athlete made a stop in North Myrtle Beach to garner some publicity.

Tom Jones began his journey from key west several weeks ago. He paddles about 20 miles a day and he's set numerous world records for similar feats.

He does it for his cause which is trying to abolish the use of plastics, which he says is ruining the earth.

"This stuff is made out of stuff that is completely harmful to humans. Why do we use it? We're smarter than that. We need to be smarter than that," said Jones.

He spoke to some children from Horry County's Boys and Girls club. He runs a non-profit called Plastic Free Ocean.
