Almost six months after the earthquake in Haiti, some temporary homes are on their way from the Grand Strand to the devastated country.
Homes from the "Shelter Haiti" project were loaded onto a ship in the Port of Georgetown Tuesday afternoon. The non-profit group "Christ in Action" coordinated the effort.
Volunteers in the Myrtle Beach area spent hundreds of hours building the 8' by 12' homes. Each should sleep 8 to 12 people. "A lot of them are living under four sticks and a sheet and T-shirts for side walls. So this is quite a blessing for them," said Teri Shields, Integrity Ship Manager.
The ship will make three round-trips to carry all the shelters.
More than 340 homes will be shipped from the port for free.
Just under half of those were built in our area.
