(AP) -- The man who began his first day as mayor-elect of South Carolina's capital city with a car crash that seriously injured another driver is set be sworn in as mayor.
Columbia city officials say Steve Benjamin is being sworn in on Wednesday.
Just hours after winning a runoff election to become the city's first black mayor, Benjamin was on his way to an early morning television interview when his Mercedes SUV collided with a Toyota Tercel.
The lawyer and lobbyist wasn't injured but was ticketed for driving without headlights.
The other driver, hotel worker Deborah Rubens, suffered brain injuries and broken bones and was ticketed for driving without insurance.
Columbia's police chief was fired over his handling of the crash investigation.
