The candidates for State Education Superintendent debated Thursday at Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach as part of the South Carolina School Administrators Summer Leadership Institute.
Republican Mick Zais says he believes in flexibility in the classroom and supports school vouchers. "I intend to offer multiple educational environments that include not only our traditional schools, but magnet schools, charter schools, online programs, schools for those who are discipline problems."
Democrat Frank Holleman says he wants get communities involved in education, and he opposes vouchers and tax credits. "Our schools are struggling, and what we've got to do is a couple of things. One, not do those tuition tax credit vouchers. Second, we need to look to every grant we each find on the local level, statewide, nationally."
Zais won his party's nomination Tuesday night after a run off with Elizabeth Moffly.
