COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The son of Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson has won the GOP nomination for South Carolina's attorney general.

Alan Wilson won Tuesday's Republican runoff over private practice attorney Leighton Lord.

Wilson faces Democrat Matthew Richardson in the general election.

The competition between Wilson and Lord grew increasingly nasty after the candidates each won about 40 percent in the Republican primary on June 8.

Wilson, a former prosecutor, took issue with Lord's lack of prosecutorial experience.

A third-party group aired television ads criticizing Wilson for failing the South Carolina bar exam and accusing him of riding his father's coattails.
