GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) -- The harbor walk in the city of Georgetown on the South Carolina coast is being renovated after more than two decades.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports the work will include new decking, lighting and railings along the wooden walkway built in the 1980s.

The walk runs along the Sampit River behind the buildings on Front Street in the city's business district.

City leaders hope the facelift will mean more tourists and more business for downtown restaurants and shops.

City council has voted to use ipe (EE-pay) wood rather than yellow pine because it is more durable, although some environmentalists worry ipe harvesting has lead to deforestation in Brazil.

The city says it plans to use only wood that already has been harvested and won't need additional material.
