(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina General Assembly has approved a bill requiring the buyer and seller of an older mobile home to ensure it has working smoke detectors.

The House voted 110-2 on Tuesday to approve Senate changes to the measure. It requires both buyer and seller to sign a form verifying the home has at least two functioning detectors.

Rep. Chip Limehouse's bill initially put the responsibility only on the buyer. The Charleston Republican called it a low-cost way to save lives in case one detector doesn't work.

The state's Manufactured Housing Institute supports the bill. Executive director Mark Dillard says older mobile homes lack the safety features of modern manufactured housing. Dillard says he hopes the check reminds buyers to later change the batteries and keep the detectors working.
