(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster is endorsing state Rep. Nikki Haley in the Republican primary runoff for governor.

McMaster joined Haley at his former campaign headquarters in Columbia on Tuesday to make a formal announcement. McMaster says Republicans need to unify behind a candidate for the fall election.

Haley and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett were the top two finishers in the GOP primary June 8. The last-place candidate, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, has endorsed Barrett.

Haley narrowly missed getting 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.

McMaster's campaign spokesman Rob Godfrey has said he doesn't think Barrett can win without resorting to negative campaigning that could damage the GOP nominee in the general election.
