(AP) -- The director of the revamped state agency that deals with unemployment says he was surprised to learn the previous agency had written off $600,000 it was owed by other agencies.

The Greenville News reported Friday that John Finan of the Department of Employment and Workforce says he learned the Employment Security Commission wrote off the money owed by other state and federal agencies as uncollectable.

Finan says he doesn't know which agencies owed the money or how long the situation has existed. But he says the agency may try again to collect the money.

Finan took over the new department that was restructured by lawmakers after the old employment security commission had a number of problems, including being forced to borrow more than $800 million to pay unemployment benefits.
